History of Sloppy Joes:
Sloppy Joes have been a beloved American classic for decades. This messy sandwich is believed to have originated in the early 20th century, most likely in the Midwest (at least, we sure think so :)). Initially, it was made with ground beef and tomato sauce. As time passed, variations emerged, with different regions adding their unique twists. Some preferred a sweeter sauce, while others added spices and vegetables.
Sloppy Joes have come a long way from just BBQ sauce and onions to including cheese and other toppings. The latest addition to this classic comfort food is the sloppy Joe stuffed bread, which we think offers a new and exciting way to enjoy this tasty dish.
Key Ingredients for Making Sloppy Joe Stuffed Bread
- Rhodes Dinner Rolls (Thaw, Rise, & Bake frozen dough) create a perfectly crisp outside that holds the sauce in and a lovely soft interior…perfect for this recipe!
- Reader Favorite Homemade Sloppy Joe Sauce.
- Mozzarella cheese, shredded
- Red peppers, chopped, optional
- Green onions, chopped
Making the Bread
- Follow the instructions on the package to thaw, rise, and bake 8 of the dinner rolls.
- Because I am only making 8 rolls for this recipe, I like to use a 9 by 9-inch pan; it forms them beautifully.
- A great place to put your dough to rise is in the oven with the light on. The light warms the oven just a bit…perfect for proofing dough.
Making the Sloppy Joe Sauce
- In a large skillet, on med-high heat, saute meat and onions until meat is in small bits and onion is transparent, about 6 minutes.
- Add garlic and continue to saute until garlic is fragrant, a minute or two.
- Pour in the first half of the water, scrape the pan, and add the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 3 min on med-high heat.
- Add the additional water, turn the heat to medium, and simmer for 12-15 minutes or until thickened. Stir often.
- Stir in the sriracha and vinegar. Let stand a couple of minutes.
Assembling the Stuffed Bread
- Prepare the sloppy joe sauce according to the previous instructions.
- Using a spoon, carefully hollow out the center of the baked rolls.
- Place the rolls on an aluminum-lined baking sheet.
- Fill the hollow rolls with the prepared sloppy joe sauce.
- Top the sloppy joe sauce with shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Top with optional chopped peppers.
Baking the Stuffed Bread
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Bake in the 350-degree oven for 15 minutes until thoroughly melted and browned.
- Top the cooked sloppy Joe stuffed bread with optional green onions.

Sloppy Joe Sauce
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup onion diced
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 3/4 cup water divided in 1/2
- 2/3 cup ketchup
- 2 dashes worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sriracha
For Assembly
- 8 Rhodes BakeNServ Dinner Rolls, baked according to pkg directions
- 1 cup Mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 1/2 cup red peppers, copped, optional
- 1/2 cup green onions, chopped
