So really, tortilla chips are simply fried tortillas. Nothing fancy. And because they are nothing fancy…you can make them at home! Make up a batch of homemade tortilla chips to serve with delicious dip for your next party, event, or simply because you want a snack. We love Tastefully Simple and use Tastefully Simple dips almost every time we are entertaining.
I love using Tastefully Simple’s dips because they are quick and easy as well as absolutely delicious! For these homemade tortilla chips I served the Fiesta Party Dip, Tastefully Simply Simply Salsa, and the Santa Fe Warm dip. Because even though these tortilla chips are amazing…they are just incomplete without a great dip!
Tip: We mix the Tastefully Simple’s Santa Fe Warm dip mix into a package of red pepper hummus and add 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese. Pop it into the microwave and YUM—healthy and delicious.
Tip: Tastefully Simple’s Fiesta Party Dip makes a great veggie dip! Especially when subbing greek yogurt for the mayo!
Now for details on making these easy homemade tortilla chips:
The only supplies that are needed are oil and tortillas. I prefer to use olive oil to keep these healthier. For crispier tortillas use vegetable oil. I prefer to use flour tortillas but corn tortillas work just fine as well.
Cover the bottom of your pan with oil and heat the oil on medium heat. The more oil you use the crispier your chips will be (think deep-fried). But regardless of how much oil you use, be sure it’s hot. I personally use less oil even though it sacrifices a bit of crispiness. My thighs say thank you.
Add your tortilla wedges to the hot oil and fry about 1 minute on each side. Don’t let the heat get so hot that you can’t keep up, but try to keep your tortillas hot enough they are frying and not simply cooking. Frying equals crispy.
Right about now, during the frying process, would be a great time to add seasonings and spices to your tortilla wedges. Suggestions would be sea salt and pepper, garlic salt and Parmesan cheese, or italian seasoning.
