So really, tortilla chips are simply fried tortillas. Nothing fancy. And because they are nothing fancy…you can make them at home! Make up a batch of homemade tortilla chips to serve with delicious dip for your next party, event, or simply because you want a snack.
How to make these easy homemade tortilla chips:
The only supplies that are needed are oil and tortillas. I prefer to use olive oil to keep these healthier. For crispier tortillas use vegetable oil. I prefer to use flour tortillas but corn tortillas work just fine as well.
Cut a stack of tortillas (I work with 6 at a time) into wedges.
Cover the bottom of your pan with oil and heat the oil on medium heat. The more oil you use the crispier your chips will be (think deep-fried). But regardless of how much oil you use, be sure it’s hot. I personally use less oil even though it sacrifices a bit of crispiness. My thighs say thank you.
Add your tortilla wedges to the hot oil and fry about 1 minute on each side. Don’t let the heat get so hot that you can’t keep up, but try to keep your tortillas hot enough they are frying and not simply cooking. Frying equals crispy.
Right about now, during the frying process, would be a great time to add seasonings and spices to your tortilla wedges. Suggestions would be sea salt and pepper, garlic salt and Parmesan cheese, or italian seasoning.
Flip them over when they are golden brown, which will differ a bit depending on your oil temperature. Try to get them dark in color, without burning, for the crispiest version.
Set your fried tortillas on a paper towel and cool. If you are making a large batch, layer the chips between paper towels to allow the chips to properly drain off the oil. You are done, well done.
