This is a lighter version of our popular Homemade Margarita Mix margarita’s. This skinny Margarita makes a single recipe full of fresh flavor and lower in calories.
Before we move forward in explaining our easy skinny margarita recipe, we need to get one thing straight:
We are talking about a classic margarita, not a blended version.
Many people think that the slushy, frozen, sweet (and probably strawberry) version of a margarita is the classic, but it actually isn’t. That drink is great, and we have a wonderful from-scratch recipe you should try! But today, we want to talk about classic margaritas. The classic is not a blended drink…and just has a couple of ice cubes in it to keep it chilled. These are made with tequila, triple sec, lime juice, and sugar. We’ve included a recipe for the original. It’s great.
We also love our homemade margarita mix as a fabulous option for keeping it easy and simple!
But…we also wanted to figure out a way to make margaritas a little bit better for you. We love them in the summer, they are refreshing and citrusy and perfect. But we don’t like the calories. So we also made an easy Skinny Margarita recipe that’s perfect, too. It’s simple to make, and uses very few ingredients.
Tips for making margaritas:
- Get a decent [easyazon_link identifier=”B015KXCB3K” locale=”US”]Tequila[/easyazon_link]. It doesn’t need to be top-shelf, but if you get something really cheap, you won’t be pleased. If you are making a blended margarita, the tequila flavor is hidden a bit more and a cheaper liquor will still work.
- Fresh squeezed is best. There’s a big difference in taste between fresh lime juice and store-bought.
- Stir/shake well. You want to make sure you incorporate the sugar and lime juice well, otherwise it will sink to the bottom and your taste will be uneven.
Margarita variations:
- Blended: This version uses a blender and a bunch of ice along with the traditional ingredients. It also usually has more sugar. It is a weaker liquor flavor.
- Skinny: This version takes out the triple sec and substitutes orange juice. Recipe below.
- Virgin: Because you can buy blended mixes that don’t have alcohol yet, margaritas are an especially fun drink for kids to have virgin versions of.
- Flavored: While the classic margarita uses lime juice, there are SO MANY more flavor options people enjoy. You can find everything from strawberry and kiwi to lavender and coconut.
