Homemade Wood Floor Cleaner

Making homemade wood floor cleaner is easier than you may think, works great, and is customizable to your preferences. And, it's gentle on the earth!

Have you tried making your own wood floor cleaner before? You really should try it at least once. I’ve been skeptical of the DIY cleaners floating around on Pinterest and the internet. They just don’t seem like they could do as good of a job as my favorite cleaner I grab from the store. And, all that work to make them!

Turns out, I was wrong. They are easy to make, work great, and are completely personalizable. Today I’m giving you the quick recipe for the wood floor cleaner that I make and use in our little house. Give it a try and see if it works out for you!

These are the floors I have throughout our entire little home. This wood floor cleaner gives them a good clean with the lemon juice and alcohol while leaving them shiny because of the oil. I always add a drop of essential oil to keep the cleaner smelling pretty.

Adjust the oil level to give you the shine you want to have. I don’t like a high shine on my floors so I keep the oil a bit lower than you may like. Simply add a bit more. You’ll figure out the perfect recipe for you!

Homemade Wood Floor Cleaner

  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil (almond oil works even better!)
  • 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 Tablespoons alcohol
  • 24 oz water

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients together well in a 28 oz spray bottle (or adjust the recipe for what size you have on hand).

To use:

Shake well before use and spray the floor with the cleaner. Use a damp rag or mop (I have a reusable “Swiffer” that I use) to mop your floor. Let dry.

Thanks for this recipe! I’m anxious to try it! I was just wondering if you knew how long a batch would keep for? I’d like to mix up a gallon at a time to store for refills, but wouldn’t want it to go bad. Thanks!!

That’s a great question! I imagine that much would keep for a few months. I usually make mine up about once a month and haven’t gone longer than that. If you do try it, let me know what you find!
