Rum Orange Cocktail Recipe

A simple rum orange cocktail recipe that is as gorgeous as it is delicious! Full of bright orange flavor and rum, orange crush cocktails are a classic and refreshing party favorite.

Orange sunset cocktail full of orange and rum.

This drink is easy to make and one of my favorites to serve at parties or when company stops by because it is so easy to make and adjust based on preferences and ingredients on hand.

Ingredients needed for orange sunset cocktail are orange soda, orange curacao (or triple sec), and rum.

Ingredients for Orange Cocktail:

  • Rum. I prefer a light rum but using a dark rum will give you a deeper flavor that is a fun variation! And I use a less expensive rum for parties and the good stuff for just us :).
  • Orange Curacao, or your favorite orange liqueur
  • Orange bitters
  • Orange soda. For a fun taste change, swap a citrus flavor soda for the orange. To cut the sweetness, use orange sparkling water or fresh oj, instead. I like to grab the orange soda in the bottles for parties and have them all lined up. There is something so fun about seeing those as part of the cocktail. Maybe that’s the little girl in me ;)
  • Ice

Tip: Try adding a bit of cream and vanilla to mimic the flavor of orange creamsicles.

Is triple sec the same as orange liqueur?

Triple Sec is the easy broad term for clear, orange liquor. Because I often have homemade margarita mix-making ingredients on hand, inexpensive triple sec is usually what I use. BUT, when I am planning ahead for a large amount of these drinks I buy a more expensive orange curacao or even Cointreau.

How to make the Orange Cocktails:

  1. In a cocktail mixing glass add one cup of ice, rum, orange curacao, orange bitters, and orange soda.
  2. Using a long-handled bar spoon stir the ingredients vigorously.
  3. Strain in a highball glass filled with ice.
  4. Rim the glass with a cut orange peel to depart the essence of orange oil, it’s an elegant touch.
  5. Add orange slices for garnish, and serve.

Ideas for garnish:

  • orange peel
  • glass rimmed in orange sugar
  • fresh mint or basil
  • slice of orange on the rim
  • dried orange on the top
