Penuche Frosting

Prep Time 20 minutes


  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 beaten egg yolks
  • 4 tablespoons water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar


  • Melt the butter on medium heat.
  • Add the brown sugar, egg yolks, and water.
  • Bring to gentle boil, stirring often.
  • After the mixture reaches a gentle boil remove from heat and stir in the almond milk.
  • Cool a bit and then beat in the powdered sugar.
  • Add more powdered sugar until the desired consistency is desired.
  • Cool and frost.


I often pour this frosting over a cake while it's warm and then let it harden. It's messy looking but oh so delicious and charming!
