Can you believe that one of the ways to get my family to unplug from their devices is to head to a theme park? Crazy, but it totally works!
I remember when, before the internet (I know, dating myself!), the theme parks were the modern, crazy places to go for the newest and best things. Not that it isn’t the case anymore, the technology and engineering that takes place at amusement parks is crazy cool, but…amusement parks still carry a sense of nostalgia and history within their gates.
Valleyfair, our Minnesota theme park, turns 40 this year. I absolutely adore that the very place I remember heading to as a teen, for a day of fun and thrills with friends and family, I can take my own family to. And, as everyone does with theme parks, they love it! My kids love the hustle and bustle, they love the thrill rides, they love the water rides (Thunder Canyon anyone?), they love the entertainment, and they love the food. They love it so much they put their phones away for the whole day and just laugh and talk. And eat.
And boy did we eat! We headed to Valleyfair for their Food Truck Fest last Saturday. This was a day where Valleyfair brought in many, many food trucks and offered sample cards to allow you to try something of everything. It was awesome! We ate, watched shows, rode rides, and hit the repeat button all day long.
Events like the Food Truck Fest are happening all summer at Valleyfair and should get on your calendar for family fun. Tell your family about the Valleyfair events, have them pick their favorite, and plan on a great day of connecting! You’ll be amazed at how willing your kids will be to set aside their phones for a day!
Our favorite at the Food Truck Fest was the minneapple pie (a deep fried apple pie with cinnamon ice cream!) and the Valleyfair’s own food truck (good prices and good food! -for real.)
We were pleasantly surprised by the other non-ride things to do at Valleyfair. Especially the White Sidewalls. Those guys were super fun and reminded me of my Grandpa taking me to rockabilly bands as a young girl! We grabbed an iced latte from Caribou (yes, they have one at Valleyfair!) and sat and listened to some great tunes while getting recharged for another round of rides. There are roaming bands, music in amphitheaters, karaoke, an extreme sport show (a finalist on America’s Got Talent!), and lots more fun if you need a rest from the screaming and walking.
I had to make Levi drive me around on the vintage old car’s. So fun! By the way, he is a terrible driver even with a track. No way he’s driving at 16. It’s going to be 25, man. Sorry dude.
I mean, come-on! How cute is this. Our vintage cars had a vintage station. I can’t even.
Anyway, if you live in Minnesota get yourself to one of Valleyfair’s events this summer…you won’t be sorry! Here are some of the next ones I’m hoping to get to…
Hotdish and Hops: June 18 & 19
Corn Feast (free corn on the cob, guys!): Sept 3-5

If you don’t live in Minnesota you have two options…
- Move. No really, we have mosquito’s, humidity, crazy snow, and crazy heat. But we also have epic coffee shops, restaurants, museum’s, ME, and Valleyfair!
- Take a trip to MN. Visit us! You’ll love it here, I promise. (just don’t come in winter and super hot summer :))
One last option, head to your local theme park. You’ll be so pleased you took the family for a day of recharging, unwinding, and connecting…device free!
