How to make a pumpkin topiary

Today let’s talk pumpkins. And topiaries. And Dollar Tree. A patched pumpkin topiary with pumpkins from the Dollar Tree. Yes, these cute Styrofoam pumpkins are $1 from the Dollar Tree. I should have bought 20,000. They are fantastic! No need to spend alot of money (the Dollar Tree is your friend!), have fancy skills, or need crazy cool products. This pumpkin project is easy, simple, and oh so cute! (Which is good, the last pumpkin project I did only gluing feathers. And my skills haven’t improved!) So, gather up your supplies, practice your pumpkin balancing and let’s get this party started.

If you don’t have a Dollar Tree near you, just head to your nearest craft store or Wal-mart. They will most likely carry Styrofoam pumpkins as well. The Dollar Tree is handy for me, and the $1 price is kinda lovely. *no, they aren’t paying me to say this…but they should!*

supplies for making a pumpkin topiary

  • 3 Styrofoam pumpkins
  • 1 dowel (a little less in length then the 3 pumpkins stacked)
  • fabric ( I used carpet samples! I know…awessooommmeee!)
  • Sharpie
  • if desired, tag and twine
  • hot glue or white glue (for gluing the fabric)

Step 1:

You will use the dowel to get your tipsy pumpkins to stand upright without falling. Run it through the pumpkins in the way you want. You will probably need to pre-drill the holes (unless you have alot of brute strength!)

Step 2:

Cut your fabric into squares and glue the squares on to your pumpkin. Overlap one on to the other for the proper “patched” pumpkin look.

Use your Sharpie (or paint pen) and create fake stitching. There is no rhyme or reason to this. If your pumpkin has a seam…add stitching along the seam.

Now, when you see those darling pumpkin topiaries in the store and are tempted…don’t!!! You can make your own! Yours will be cheaper and far more adorable! Now, head to the Dollar Tree and pick up your pumpkins. And you do know that every season has it’s own variation of this…eggs, Jack-o-lanterns, stars, etc…

If you love pumpkin as much as I do try my Pumpkin Gingersnap Pie. And… let’s say you like to laugh at my old posts. Let’s say that you like to look at past projects and giggle at how bad they are. Well then I have one for you… hobnail pumpkins. Yeah, you are welcome.
