Number One [Sunscreen]:
When I am heading outside for extended periods of time I also slather spf 30 on my skin (P.S. The spray versions are fast and easy to use!). Because I have sensitive skin I have been pretty faithful to the Oil of Olay brand for my product of choice. But, I also like Suki Skincare, and Aveeno’s sunscreen line. Truthfully, I think it’s about finding something that works great for you and being consistent.
I struggle with remembering to use sunscreen everyday, but here in MN with the winter being as dry as the desert I don’t forget to wear moisturizer. Therefore, sneaking it into my moisturizer is a surefire way of getting it on my skin.
If you ever see me “tanning”, it’s a fake tan and I’m slathered in sunscreen pretending to catch the rays.
Number Two [Make-up Free]:
I honestly don’t know if there is any science to this concept or if it is something I dreamt up but… I am a stickler for having “make-up free” days. My skin just seems to want a day off, to breathe, and be old, kinda like a “respect me” symbol.
On a make-up free day all my age, stress, and lack of sleep is clearly visible and reminds me to take better care of myself. Or, alternately, I can see that I have been having a great week and my skin glows…keep it up! I take time to respect my skin as it is, go without any product on my face (except sunscreen!), and let my skin chill out.
Levi and I took a weekend, packed a bag of clothes, got into the car and drove where we felt like. That weekend was a make-up free, hair in a pony, and comfy clothes weekend. It was fantastic! You can tell in this pic that I was feeling pretty good and my skin showed.
Number Three [Vice-free]:
Do I really need to go into the evils smoking, drinking, and drugs have on your skin? But, it’s very true. I realize these are had habits to break but if you are a smoker, a heavy drinker, or do drugs you NEED to quit if you want young looking skin. Sorry, it’s true.
I do believe in the power of a glass of wine, pint of beer, or margarita on a Friday night or Sunday Football party. I would say those fall into the de-stress category, wouldn’t you say? That beer in the pic above was after a long, hard week and enjoyed with my husband.
Number Four [Beverages]:
Your body adores hydration. So give it as much as possible. Let me give you a tip…caffeine and sugared beverages cause dehydration taking AWAY needed hydration. Meaning, you go backwards in the hydration department. Why on earth would you do that on purpose if you want to look young and fresh? I have a cup of coffee in the morning, and sometimes a coke (about 2 times a week). After that I try to stay hydrated with lemon water, ginger and lemon tea (my absolutely morning fave!), teas, and even milk.
Hydrating right away in the morning seems to work so much better…try a glass of water and tea right away when you wake up!
Number Five [Sleep]:
I bet you $5 that you aren’t sleeping enough, and I bet you another $5 that you have your phone or computer on right up until you go to sleep. I’ll get you my mailing address :).
This one is a real struggle for me. When I’m busy it seems only wise to stay up late and get more done. I often will put in a day or two of late nights. But I try very hard to stay consistent with what I KNOW works for me for sleep (about 7 hours a night).
I also shut off my computer and phone about an hour before bed, and read for 20 minutes. There is absolutely nothing better than feeling rested…nothing.
Number Six [De-Stress]:
Stress causes acne, as we all already know. But it also causes dullness, sagging, discoloration, and all sorts of other problems, probably because stress causes us to not eat well, sleep well, or take care of our self. Whatever the reason, when I am stressed I wear it on my face like a giant stress make-over of horrible.
Often, for me, just a few moments with a cup of tea and one of my children is enough to de-stress enough to kick the make-over of horrible. Sometimes it requires more effort…a night off, a binge night of my favorite show, even a night out at my favorite brewery. Find your little ways to combat stress and use them often.
Here in our little town they have a once a month “Ladies Night Out” in which the local businesses have sales, treats, and fun little things. We love this night and take advantage of it when we can. The owners of one of my favorite stores even had my favorite beer waiting for me in a vintage wine glass. I know…how fun is that!
Number Seven [Vitamins]:
Eating lots of vitamin-rich food is ideal. Shove veggies, fruit, and antioxidants into your face as often as you can. Be smart about what you eat. And, if needed…take a multi-vitamin!
You are only as healthy as what you put into your body combined with what you let get taken out. Meaning, eating vitamin-rich food but drinking loads of sugared drinks is a futile effort. Don’t stop eating the vitamin-rich foods, no way! Stop putting crap into your body that leaks out good nutrients and hydration. THEN you will see your face look the way you feel…amazing! (free tip for the day :))
