tiered tin tower

Have you seen those DIY tiered cake stands popping up everywhere lately?
Well, I have. And I sincerely wanted one.
But, I had no purpose for it. And that means it can,t be mine. No purpose. No love.
But…I needed some additional storage for my odds and ends baking supplies. Hmmm.

I saw a pic on Pinterest and it confirmed my suspicions.
I could use the same concept as the cake tiers, in a better way for me!
The Pinterest pic…

Isn’t she the cutest!

My local antique store has scores of vintage tins for cheap, cheap, cheap!
That was a no-brainer as to where to get my hands on some great tins.
I got these…

In hindsight, the bright Ritz tin wasn’t such a great idea. But…it works.
The key was that the tins were varying sizes, but not too great of a difference.
I also was going to use the black candlestick for the base tier.

My trusty mini glue gun. I love me my glue gun.

I took the lid off the tin, flipped it so the top was up then glued the candlestick to the top of the tin and bottom of the tin.
So far so good.

This is where it got hairy. I intended to put a dowel through the tins by drilling a whole
and hot glueing into place. It seemed the way to go…

But, the dowel leaned. It was crooked. And wobbly. Even though the hot glue stayed in place.
But, it would not do. (My H has since told me that I simply needed a larger dowel…next time)

I went BACK to my antique store and got these. They were $2 apiece.
More then I wanted to spend. But, I wanted to finish this baby. And they are pretty.

I hot glued the candlesticks in between each tin. I actually used the black candlestick INSIDE the Ritz can
as extra height cause that tin is so stinking tall.
It looks great!
Now, if I used candlesticks from the dollar store and saved my tins from other things…the possiblities!
But, a girl can only have so many of these laying around. One in every house…perhaps?
The actual cost:
All 3 tins cost $4.00
The candlesticks cost $8.00
And some gluesticks
Total Cost…$12.00

I am okay with that. I would pay it again.

Just me,
Janel

P.S. Can I just say that I am still having huge problems with taking decent pictures with my point and shoot.
Even after 3 days of my 10 day series…
Great projects mean nothing without decent pictures of them. The picture on the left I tried out Photoshop 10 with. Its better.

  1. Cake stands of any sort are my all – time weakness..These are the cutest things ever! Thank you for the idea.. :)

  2. Making one of these is on my list, so I’ll skip right to the candle holders in the color I want. Thanks for blazing the trail with the dowel.

    • Yep…and I later made with by spraying the candle holders the color I wanted. Then I could get tacky ones people were getting rid of!
