Okay guys. There has been a lot of hoopla over on Facebook lately.
Facebook is scaring the snot out of some business pages and blogs.
All because of this promotion feature they are rolling out.
Which looks like you have to pay for your status updates.
Do NOT be scared! Do NOT freak out!! It’s not scary!!
Here are some of the changes you will see…
1. Number of People reached with a percent after it at the bottom of your status update.
This percent and number of people is not new. It is just now visible to you much more easily. Facebook uses an algorithm to determine the number of friends that see your page updates. This is not a new thing. They simply can’t send out that much information all the time…that would be massive!! They must limit the amount of information sent. There are a few factors as to how they determine this. One of which is the interaction a reader has with you. The only change…you now see those numbers. Tip: Increase the interaction your reader has with you to see this number increase.
2. The “Promotion” feature is now an option you can choose upon writing your update.
Facebook is giving you the option of paying to have your update reach all of your likes. This is why they are now showing you the percentage…to up the appeal of using this feature. You can pay based on the amount of your “likes” you want to reach. The higher dollar amount..the great number of reaches. This is very much like an ad. It will put your update on the News Feed of all of your likes for a certain amount of time (Facebook hasn’t specified) and cause it to pop up for that amount of time. This is a great feature for businesses to promote sales and reach readers. It may become annoying to some as well. Remember that algorithm they use to determine who sees your updates? It isn’t used here…it is sent to the number of likes you paid for irregardless of their interaction with you. They are simply adding this choice every time you post an update. They want you to do it so they can make money. Makes sense on their part…annoying on yours.
(If I had enough fans I would take a screen shot but, alas, I don’t. Hint…go to the sidebar and click on FAcebook to like me)
3. Facebook is simply needing to find ways to make money now that they are public.
The way you have been using Facebook hasn’t changed. And, I am sure Facebook realizes that changing too much would be a bad move. But, they do need to make money. I am sure this won’t be the last change we see that tries to earn money. It has to be done. But, let’s not freak out about it.
Bottom line….You don’t have to pay Facebook anything unless you want to. It doesn’t change what you have had on Facebook. At all.
