I had this scheduled a few weeks ago.
Since writing this there have been many other blogs with similar thoughts and posts.
I wondered if I should repeat.
But then I took my own advice and didn’t worry about making a “mistake”.
So there you go…
If you are a blogger…don’t hate me at the end of this post.
Cause I am a blogger too.
We are comrades.
But I’m needing to let it hang out there.
To give some chin-up’s and it’s okay’s
to the new bloggers.
Or the “small” bloggers.
I don’t care how amazing your blog is.
How many followers you have.
How great you are at “networking” with other bloggers.
You did it too.
You were a newbie.
And made all the newbie mistakes.
So, while I want to help new bloggers learn (and gosh, I’m still new)
I want to be gracious as well.
You with me?
I’m relatively new to blogging.
And when I started blogging I thought
that it was a simple matter of putting
crafts out there for the world to see.
And you would smile, love them,
and make your world a happier place.
What I didn’t know
was all the technicalities.
The vast blogging community.
The HTML code’s
The png’s, jpg’s and sizing.
The editing, the editing, the editing.
And the blogging etiquette.
For every post you see it takes some
serious time to just write the post
never mind doing the craft itself.
Silly me…I didn’t realize.
So if you are a non-blogger…
cut us some slack if you see something
a bit wonky. Or a picture not so great.
We don’t all use high-tech,
fancy DSLR camera’s.
And we all aren’t computer whizzes.
If you are a new blogger…
it takes time to learn.
take it easy.
one thing at a time.
and here’s my tips, such as they are…
1. Post less…with better content.
If it’s a choice of posting just random stuff or making sure you got something worthwhile…go for something worthwhile.
Make it count.
2. Learn how to photograph.
Natural light is a great resource.
Learn when is the best time of day for certain parts of your house.
Build yourself a cardboard box lightbox.
Take multiple shots.
If you don’t get good ones…wait for better lighting, change the location. Whatever.
Photos are important.
I never realized how much.
3. Grammar and spelling!
Okay, so I have a casual style.
I purposely throw in whatcha, gotcha, and all kind’s of ridiculous grammar.
But, that is my style.
I certainly can compose a well-crafted sentence with beautiful structure, punctuation, and spelling…if necessary.
And, it is necessary for most bloggers.
So, take the time to make sure you have your ducks in a row.
No-one likes to read a how-to by somebody that can’t spell. It will make you lose points.
Ya know what I’m saying (yes, that was on purpose)?
4. Social Media.
There are lots of places and resources that can suck your time.
You can go to parties, you can comment on other blogs, you can invite other’s to your blog.
All of those things are fine and dandy.
But if you do any one thing well, use social media.
Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest are your best friends.
5. Blogger pet peeves.
I don’t personally get too terribly upset if you have word verification, music, crazy graphics, funky colors, and whatever on your blog.
I just won’t come.
Cause it’s annoying.
Just like you don’t have to come to my blog if my casual writing style and sarcasm annoys you.
But a tip…other bloggers are a huge source of traffic for you.
Learn what makes them tick.
Learn what they don’t like.
And here is the quick rundown…
a. word verification. shut it off. Perhaps you have reasons…that’s your choice. But most bloggers Hate Hate Hate it. So shut it off.
b. music. Yep, it’s cute. Yep, it’s kinda funny. It’s still annoying. I am trying to sneak onto blog’s while pretending to work and you have music that blares from my computer. Stink…now everyone knows I wasn’t working. Think about not using music.
c. funky colors and graphics. I’m young, I can read it. (yep, I’m rubbing it in to all my “older” friends). But, a great deal of people have difficulty reading it. Try to stick to your basic font’s, colors, and themes. I promise…it will be appreciated.
d. I followed you…follow me back. Don’t. Do. That! I never realized how much this was disliked until recently. Yes, it annoys me but I just ignore it. It annoys most all bloggers. And those bigger blogs whose attention you might want? They will for shizzle ignore you. Not a good tactic. Just say something postive…”hey, you got a great blog and I am soo happy to follow you!” , chances are they stop over to your blog to leave you a comment. And hey! follow you in process. Much better plan!
e. Linky parties. I have one. It stinks. In fact, it’s named the Stinky Linky Party and you are probably here for it, thanks! Cause everyone and their brother has one. I don’t invite people to it. Most larger blogs get invitations by the dozens…each. and every. day. No joke. I can’t possibly go to all those parties. So, try to limit your invitations to those blogs you truly know would be interested. Thank you.
I don’t know who told you you would make loads of money blogging.
Disown them immediately.
Cause they are big, fat, liars.
If you blog for money…Quit.
Now, I do make some money, not lying…but it’s not nearly as much as my time is worth.
But, I have been working hard at this for months.
If you need some help learning ad’s, networks, and such…shoot me an e-mail.
Blogging should be fun.
I should go to your blog and see you having fun.
If I don’t, I won’t come back.
So enjoy yourself.
Don’t worry about how many readers you have
Cause if you have fun…they will come!
Don’t worry if you are making “blogging” mistakes.
It happens, no use getting your panties in a crescent roll!
Okay..that’s all for now.
Please don’t hate me for life.
Just go forth and have fun!
Create happy places for your family!
And don’t get caught up in what you can’t do, what others aren’t doing well, or what you wish you could learn faster.
Cause you and all your stinking faults are pretty darn cool!
At least I think so.
And my opinion is all that matters on this here blog!
